ABOUT STARCATCHER STUDIO

IMG_0664.JPG

My name is Lee Silva. I have been creating glass art for over twenty-five years. It all began in the early 1990s, while I was attending Berklee College of Music in Boston. I took a stained glass class with an artist friend, at a small, mom-and-pop stained glass studio in coastal Massachusetts. I became amazed at how much I enjoyed creating stained glass projects. I created hanging panels to give to family and friends, along with a few Tiffany-style lampshades. But, I quickly realized that small, useful items were my favorite to produce, such as candle holders, barrettes, jewelry boxes, and especially jewelry! I began to produce stained glass pendants and earrings using the “cold glass” technique (cut glass or glass cabochons edged with copper foil and soldered). My teachers were a husband and wife team who were excited about the future of glasswork and tried to keep up with cutting edge methods. They introduced me to dichroic glass and fused or warm glass (glass fired in a kiln) and this quickly became my favorite medium. I sold my jewelry at craft shows for several years thought Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts. Then, in 1998, my daughter Sophie was born. I continued to create glass jewelry on a smaller scale, while enjoying being a stay-at-home mom for her first five years. Since then, I  have worked full time in a local non-profit agency. Now that Sophie is a beautiful, young adult in college, she is helping me by creating this website to sell my pieces. I now do just one or two craft shows per year, and sometimes a home show, which is the most fun!

I love sparkle and bright colors, which is why dichroic glass is my chosen medium. One of the most exciting parts of creating fused glass is that cold layered glass goes into the kiln and results in unexpectedly beautiful treasures! All of my pieces are one-of-a kind. Often, I try to create matchings sets, so many pieces may match nicely with others, even if they are not sold as a set. I use sterling silver for all ear wires and either sterling silver or silver plated chains for necklaces and pendants.
